While in college, I worked part time as an English tutor for children of Japanese auto industry executives living and working temporarily in the United States. It was a wonderful experience learning about their traditions while using language to further explore our cultures. After graduating from college, I had the opportunity to live in Mexico where I expanded my Spanish skills and also volunteered at the Mexican Red Cross where I served as an interpreter for U.S. doctors providing free medical and dental services in rural communities. While living in Mexico, I worked for a U.S. company with headquarters in Ypsilanti, Michigan in which some of my responsibilities included assessing English proficiency in reading, writing and conversational skills of Mexican engineers as they conducted business between the U.S. and Mexico. Upon returning to California, I was able to apply my language skills and psychology background working as a service coordinator for Spanish speaking families and individuals with developmental disabilities.
It’s been almost 10 years that I joined the ERUSD family serving as an Interpreter and Translator in the Special Education Department. I trained as a court interpreter in order to acquire skills in sight, consecutive and simultaneous interpretations techniques as applied during IEP meetings, parent conferences and trainings, board meetings and other district related interpretation/translation needs and services. I have also contracted with state and private companies providing interpretation services during public hearings, conferences, mental health trainings and legal translations.
